About Barnett Web design

I want first to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Jeanne Barnett, and I am the Owner and sole Designer for Barnett-Web.com. At least for now.

I came to web design out of necessity really. As an entrepreneur for the past 20 years with my business www.ornamentz.com, it was way too costly for me to hire outside professionals to do all the things that I needed and wanted to do for my own website. And as the old saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself! Not that I wouldn't have liked to have been able to afford it!

(A little backstory) In 1992 I had started a small crafting business that did well enough for me to consider doing it full time. In 1995, I won a trade show contest and was able to appear on QVC in the Delaware 50-50 tour. After a complete sellout of 4200 ornaments in less than 5 minutes, I thought my future was set in stone, but it was not to be. QVC did offer me a deal, however, their price points were not such that it would have made any sense for me to do it. So back to craft tables and consignments I went, and I also took a full time job as a legal secretary since the ornaments were not enough to sustain me.

Enter the Internet - in 1996 my husband became involved in an Internet/website enterprise with a friend of his and they used my ornament business as their guinea pig. It was a rough looking website, but at the time we thought it was just beautiful. I do remember being very frustrated, however, whenever I wanted to change something on the website. It was hard to communicate what I wanted, and it seemed to take forever for the changes to get done. I have to really laugh sometimes when I look back at the old web pages on the Wayback Machine. Orna Mentz has come a long way baby!

But I will say that in spite of the amateur web presentation, I actually started to make some significant sales! Even worldwide sales and a few large quantity orders from time to time, and the prospects were very exciting. Each year the sales increased, by very little, but still enough to keep me motivated.

In 2002, my husband and I split up. Since the website was hosted by his friend, I wanted to make a clean break so I signed on with www.Gemini-ISP.com. The Owner, Masakela Walls was good enough to sit down with me and show me some basics in how to edit my own site. At first it was frightening, I used to break out in a cold sweat everytime I went to upload a page, but eventually I got the hang of it and I really did enjoy the process.

Back then, when the ornament business was rather busy, with sales increasing more and more every year, I only taught myself enough to make text edits and add products to the Prostores shopping cart, which I still use to this day. In fact, I am still being hosted by Gemini, and Mas continues to offer great support and instruction whenever I have a question that I cannot find the answer to.

In 2007, when the economy crashed, my Orna Mentz business lost half of it's gross revenue. Suddenly, I had a lot more time on my hands so I began to study web design on a deeper level. I finally made myself begin to learn Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I also studied up on what SEO (Search Engine Optimization) was all about, and soon I was writing web pages in hours instead of days. I launched a website for our local flea market, which is known worldwide as The Hillsville Flea Market and then created a website for a jewelry making friend of mine "BeadXilla".

It seemed that things began to really snowball when another friend, whom I had been ordering health products from, needed help with her websites (she had 8 in all!), so I offered to do them for her in exchange for products and this has led me to where I am right now, and that is simply that I now have enough confidence and expertise to get anyone online, with an attractive, functioning website, with or without a shopping cart!

The world of web design is an ever changing and challenging terrain, and I don't pretend to 'know it all' but I can guarantee, if I don't know something that needs to be done, I will figure it out, and I will work with you on every level of developing your web presence. Call me old school, but I still believe that hand coding the pages with a minimum of bells and whistles gives you the cleanest, most impressive and streamlined website available at the very low monthly rates that I have listed in my "Prices" page. Give me a call or send an e-mail to discuss your vision for your business, or simply browse through the "Themes" page where I have pre-written several design options. I look forward to hearing from you!
